MEETING   - 16th SEPTEMBER, 2011

This was our second year of running an auction at our meeting night.    Our thanks go to Auctioneer and Co-ordinator, John Hewitt for a job well done, with 156 lots being sold. Also thanks to David Thorsby, Warren Wilson, Steve Wackwitz and Betty Berry for all the preparation and the work they put into the night. Thanks of course also applies to all other members who were on hand to erect staging from 6.00 pm and have birds benched soon after, for the viewing to commence at 7.00 p.m. Security of the birds and cages were of great importance, and this task was capably done by a number of members, as was the assistance of others in the area of clerical and stewarding duties.    It was most pleasing to see so many of our members working together with great enthusiasm to make the night such a successful venture.   The continuous supper was appreciated by all, especially those who had travelled some distance to attend the night. The funds raised will greatly assist the running of our  Annual Shows

April Meeting Report

The Annual April moult deterred our table show, but this did not stop our Double Feature for the month which included Jean Painter’s large box of gadgets she uses in her birdroom and aviary.    For our newer members this proved very interesting and informative for them.

Garry Yannakis and David Lawless-Pyne gave us a practical demonstration of show preparation, which included de-spotting and then they ran through the washing and cleaning procedures required for the best way to present your birds for judging.   Some members brought along birds for practical tuition of this important way of preparing your birds for exhibition.   Garry also spoke on the importance of show cage preparation.

I am sure those attending this month’s meeting went home with plenty of new ideas for their aviary/birdroom and birds.

 MARCH  MEETING

With the successful feature on Open Judging from our February meeting, the Committee decided to conduct a similar presentation this month.    Jean Painter volunteered to “anchor” the night, requesting members to judge two classes – Dominant Pieds and Clearwings – and to fill in the placings in the handout she provided.   Jean then judged them, and a cross-check was made of her placings against the members’ decisions, and this created much discussion.   Jean then judged several other classes, commenting on her results.     Champion Bird of the Night was benched by Bruce and Nola Bradford.

IMPORTANT NEWS.

MAGAZINE EDITOR:   Marilyn Harrington resigned six days prior to Christmas Day, which did not allow such notice to be included in the last issue of the magazine.    This has created much concern, as the next issue has a closing date of 1st February.     A condensed Newsletter may have to be published in the meantime, which would include the 2011 BSNSW ANNUAL SHOW SCHEDULE.     Please contact Warren Wilson or John Smithers if anyone is in a position to assist in resolving this situation at such a critical time just before the National event in Canberra next May.

USE OF PROBIOTICS In Caged & Aviary Birds

By Dr Colin Walker  BSc, BVSc, MRCVS, MACVSc (Avian health)

 Note on Probiotic Use
In some metropolitan areas, the addition of fluoride or chlorine to drinking water may interfere with the action of probiotics. In metropolitan areas, treatment plants are situated throughout the water-distribution network. According to Australian authorities, the concentration of fluoride and chlorine throughout most of the network is too low to exert an effect. However, the concentration in the water of aviculturalists close to a treatment plant may be high enough to kill the probiotic organisms. These substances will, however, evaporate from treated water if it is allowed to stand for 24 hours. Aviculturalists in any doubt are best to set aside water to be medicated with probiotics for 24 hours before use. Simply standing the required volume of water in several buckets awaiting use is adequate. Alternatively, rainwater or distilled water could be used. Most water-soluble probiotic preparations can be added to the feed. Indeed, with some preparations, this ensures a more immediate and effective delivery of the probiotics to the digestive tract.

MUTTERINGS FROM MANAGEMENT

After many months, The Show Committee has found some common ground on definitions for birds to be shown in classes, now that the rings are issued in September each year. These definitions below were approved by the Management Committee on Monday evening. The amendment of the By-law 2(a) taken to Management is:

Definitions:

a)      “UBC” – (Unbroken Cap) is a baby bird that has not commenced its first moult and has no Adult plumage feathers.

b)      “Juvenile” – is a bird rung with a ring issued on 1st September and encoded with the following calendar year and which is too young to be allowed to compete in the next A.N.B.C. Competition.

c)      Young” – is a bird which is eligible to compete at the next A.N.B.C. Competition. These birds will cease to be eligible to compete in this section as from the 31st August.

d)      Any Age” (previously Old) – is a bird of any age. Restricted exhibitors may only show birds in Open Any Age section without penalty, if there are no Restricted Any Age classes provided in the Show schedule.

Note: All birds are to carry only one metal closed ring. These definitions will now be included in the BSNSW Show Rules

The 2011 National N.S.W. Team Carers will be Ian Hanington, Matt Campbell and Geoff Wood.

Nola Bradford was elected Official BSNSW Photographer.

A suggestion has been “put forward” to reduce the number of birds each Team can bench at the STCC to 3, instead of 4.    Decisions from Teams required.

2010 Branch Annual Shows that did not have more than 250 birds entered, can apply to the BSNSW Show Manager for double Platinum Wing points, for an incentive to bolster entries at their 2011 event.

St George Fund Raising Auction - Friday 20th August, 2010.

Thanks to John, David, Jean and Betty for all the preparation and the work they put into the night.    Thanks of course also applies to all other members who were on hand to erect staging from 6.30 pm and have birds benched soon after for the viewing to commence at 7.30 PM.

Security of the birds and cages were of great importance, and this task was capably done by a number of members, as was the assistance of others in the area of clerical and stewarding duties.   It was most pleasing to see so many of our members working together with such enthusiasm to make the night such a successful venture.

The continuous supper was appreciated by all, especially those who had travelled some distance to attend the night.     The funds raised will greatly assist the running of our 2011 Annual Show

Fallows by Dewayne Weldon

The Fallow Budgies are, in my opinion, some of the more beautiful of the many budgie mutations.  The generally accepted view is that we have three distinct mutations of this unique group of birds.  The German Fallow seems to be the one that more breeders are working with, and the only one I have extended experience with.

Having access to one of the original mutations is necessary as they can not be re-created simply by crossing other mutations.  The "pet quality" fallow is the most common starting point for anyone wishing to take up the "Fallow Challenge".  My Fallow line originated from such birds.  Some three or four years before I acquired my first Fallow, I started working with a long time friend to improve the birds she had been working with for a decade or more.  I supplied her with some of my best normals to cross into her small birds.  The splits from those initial matings were paired together to produce more visual Fallows which were again mated to some of my best normals.  Those resulting splits produced a much improved Fallow cock which my friend gave to me to start my own Fallow project some ten years ago.

That original cock was mated to two of my best unrelated normal hens.  The resulting half sibling splits were mated to produce more visual Fallows. The best of these were again mated to top quality normals and the process repeated.  The major problem in working with a straight recessive variety is the tremendous waste factor involved.  One must be truly dedicated to improving the variety and willing to accept the associated drawbacks.

Generally speaking, over a very large number of pairings of split to split, only one in four of the resulting offspring will be a visual fallow.  Of the remaining three normal appearing chicks, two will carry the fallow genes in split form and the third will not.  Since test mating is required to determine which might carry the fallow genes, I usually send them to the pet shop as culls.

This is a very general summation of the approach I have taken to upgrade my Fallows.  I will be happy to answer specific questions should anyone need further assistance.  Best of luck, Dewayne

. JUNE MEETING

Our Annual Sale Night was very well supported by the general public, due to the advertisements in two issues of the “St. George Leader” the week before, and the “Telegraph” the Saturday and Sunday prior to the Sale Night.    It was also on our web page and associated links, as well as in “Budgerigar”.   This night is a great opportunity for members to sell excess stock, and also for birds to be kept in the Branch.   I am aware that enquiries have come to our Branch and we gained three new memberships from this popular event.

MUTTERINGS FROM MANAGEMENT

STCC , NATIONAL SHOW AND MEETINGS  - Comprehensive reporting on these events and meetings was provided by Society representatives.   Motion to have the 3 birds benched at the National Show was not put forward in Rockhampton.  At the meeting Alistair Home, BCT asked the President could the meeting be suspended for delegates to discuss the agenda items generally, as so many of the items proposed appeared to cancel one another out.   Fruitful discussions/debate continued for some time to try to gain benefits for both sides of the proposals within the agenda and obtain a result with some common ground.   It was agreed that:  the BSNSW and BCV conduct their shows in 2011 and 2012 with all three birds to be benched.   All 21 birds would receive an award, but the two highest placed birds from each State/Zone would receive the points.    The SQBBA and BSSA would conduct their shows in 2013 and 2014 with only two birds being brought and benched in each of the existing 22 classes and to include at least two new varieties.   (It was mentioned that it would be nice to see a class of Violets at the National.)   The new varieties would be discussed and approved at the 2011 National Meeting.   A general consensus of these proposals was agreed upon and a decision confirming this is to be made by postal vote by 1st October.    Management to seek replies from Branches.    The BSNSW Secretary to forward out relative paperwork

BSNSW ANNUAL SHOW 2011 -   Secretary to forward out paperwork for replies, as the January date is not favoured due to heat concerns.   Looking at the third weekend in June 2011/12.

STATE TEAM SELECTION NIGHT

After months of promoting our class varieties for the State Team Challenge our members were on hand, full of expectations of having bird/s selected in our Branch Team.   199 birds were benched, which included a Spangle class of 17, also 19 Opalines and 13 Grey Normals to choose from.   Our Judges were Jim Baker, John Carter, Jean Painter and Warren Wilson, and on completion we felt we were benching a strong team.   John Hewitt and Colin Morgan co-ordinated our Judges to comment after each class on why the various birds had been chosen.    Those selected were entered on the computer and had some final “dressing up” prior to their trip to Kellyville.  Some members did bring birds along and unfortunately they were not selected, but their efforts to hopefully assist the Branch were certainly appreciated.  Thanks to those members who brought along some lovely goodies for our continuous supper.

OUR TEAM REPRESENTATIVES WERE:  Wilson Family,  G. Gregoriou,  B.& N. Bradford,  J. Painter ,      J. Baker,  Yannakis & Lawless-Pyne,  J. Hewitt,  A. Bate,   B. Berry, Wackwitz Family, Thorsby Family,

STATE TEAM CHALLENGE COMPETITION

A large number of members were on hand the next day to cheer us into fifth place, which was disappointing.   Four birds were selected into the State Team.  Congratulations to our representatives: John Hewitt (2), Lutino and Albino, Betty Berry Clearbody and Jean Painter Crest.   Thanks to all members who brought birds along to our Selection Night.

At the Australian Championships in Rockhampton, our members, John Hewitt won second place in the Albino class, and seventh in the Lutino class.   Jean Painter finished ninth in the Crest class.

Our congratulations go to these members on a wonderful achievement.

April Meeting Report

Table Show   -   John Carter judged the 38 Blue rung birds benched, awarding Champion Bird to Bob Pitt.

Feature  -   Jean Painter and Warren Wilson chaired a talk on “The Moult” and new members would have gained considerable knowledge from their many hints about caring for the birds at this time, when the birds need to be given extra care and feeding to enable them to come through the moult in peak condition.   Members asked many questions and also provided some input themselves into a very interesting topic, especially at this time of the year.    Preparation of the birds for the coming State Team Challenge Competition was also discussed to assist members to bring their birds to the selection in near perfect condition.
The St. George Branch members extend their sincere condolences to Jim and Brenda Baker and their family

on the passing of Jim’s mother on Thursday, 13th May, 2010.
