. JUNE MEETING

Our Annual Sale Night was very well supported by the general public, due to the advertisements in two issues of the “St. George Leader” the week before, and the “Telegraph” the Saturday and Sunday prior to the Sale Night.    It was also on our web page and associated links, as well as in “Budgerigar”.   This night is a great opportunity for members to sell excess stock, and also for birds to be kept in the Branch.   I am aware that enquiries have come to our Branch and we gained three new memberships from this popular event.

MUTTERINGS FROM MANAGEMENT

STCC , NATIONAL SHOW AND MEETINGS  - Comprehensive reporting on these events and meetings was provided by Society representatives.   Motion to have the 3 birds benched at the National Show was not put forward in Rockhampton.  At the meeting Alistair Home, BCT asked the President could the meeting be suspended for delegates to discuss the agenda items generally, as so many of the items proposed appeared to cancel one another out.   Fruitful discussions/debate continued for some time to try to gain benefits for both sides of the proposals within the agenda and obtain a result with some common ground.   It was agreed that:  the BSNSW and BCV conduct their shows in 2011 and 2012 with all three birds to be benched.   All 21 birds would receive an award, but the two highest placed birds from each State/Zone would receive the points.    The SQBBA and BSSA would conduct their shows in 2013 and 2014 with only two birds being brought and benched in each of the existing 22 classes and to include at least two new varieties.   (It was mentioned that it would be nice to see a class of Violets at the National.)   The new varieties would be discussed and approved at the 2011 National Meeting.   A general consensus of these proposals was agreed upon and a decision confirming this is to be made by postal vote by 1st October.    Management to seek replies from Branches.    The BSNSW Secretary to forward out relative paperwork

BSNSW ANNUAL SHOW 2011 -   Secretary to forward out paperwork for replies, as the January date is not favoured due to heat concerns.   Looking at the third weekend in June 2011/12.

A NUMBER OF POSITIONS WILL BE VACANT AT THE A.G.M., SO COME ALONG AND TAKE ON A WORK TASK.

STATE TEAM SELECTION NIGHT

After months of promoting our class varieties for the State Team Challenge our members were on hand, full of expectations of having bird/s selected in our Branch Team.   199 birds were benched, which included a Spangle class of 17, also 19 Opalines and 13 Grey Normals to choose from.   Our Judges were Jim Baker, John Carter, Jean Painter and Warren Wilson, and on completion we felt we were benching a strong team.   John Hewitt and Colin Morgan co-ordinated our Judges to comment after each class on why the various birds had been chosen.    Those selected were entered on the computer and had some final “dressing up” prior to their trip to Kellyville.  Some members did bring birds along and unfortunately they were not selected, but their efforts to hopefully assist the Branch were certainly appreciated.  Thanks to those members who brought along some lovely goodies for our continuous supper.

OUR TEAM REPRESENTATIVES WERE:  Wilson Family,  G. Gregoriou,  B.& N. Bradford,  J. Painter ,      J. Baker,  Yannakis & Lawless-Pyne,  J. Hewitt,  A. Bate,   B. Berry, Wackwitz Family, Thorsby Family,

C Halasz,  C & M  Morgan,  K & S Liley,  Smith & Parsons, Craig Geering, A & C Merriman, P House  and V Kocoski.

STATE TEAM CHALLENGE COMPETITION

A large number of members were on hand the next day to cheer us into fifth place, which was disappointing.   Four birds were selected into the State Team.  Congratulations to our representatives: John Hewitt (2), Lutino and Albino, Betty Berry Clearbody and Jean Painter Crest.   Thanks to all members who brought birds along to our Selection Night.

At the Australian Championships in Rockhampton, our members, John Hewitt won second place in the Albino class, and seventh in the Lutino class.   Jean Painter finished ninth in the Crest class.

Our congratulations go to these members on a wonderful achievement.

Feature  -   Jean Painter and Warren Wilson chaired a talk on “The Moult” and new members would have gained considerable knowledge from their many hints about caring for the birds at this time, when the birds need to be given extra care and feeding to enable them to come through the moult in peak condition.   Members asked many questions and also provided some input themselves into a very interesting topic, especially at this time of the year.    Preparation of the birds for the coming State Team Challenge Competition was also discussed to assist members to bring their birds to the selection in near perfect condition.

MARCH MEETING SUMMARY

Marc Noakes was our guest lecturer who provided us with a most entertaining and informative Power Point Presentation on “How to Introduce Hybrid Vigor into to your Stud”.    Part of the notes he based his talk on included:   “Breeding strategies in small closed populations include line breeding (selective breeding) and colony breeding.     Out Breeding occurs when new DNA is introduced into a population.   In the wild this occurs when individuals immigrate from one population to another.

In breeding occurs when there is no introduction of new genetic material into a population and the genetic diversity is restricted or decreases.    In the wild this usually occurs when a population is cut off from other populations, (for example by a river, mountain range or even through loss or fragmentation of habitat by human activity.)

Artificial selection occurs when pairs are mated in a controlled environment (an aviary colony; or breeding cabinets) to ensure the parentage of individuals – or rather, to minimise the change that the parents are other than those we have chosen to mate.    Line breeding is a special form of artificial selection where single pair are mated so the exact pedigree of that family can be recorded and tracked.   If you breed brother to sister from the same family generation after generation then you are line-breeding.   If you breed from less related individuals then you are line-outbreeding.”

TABLE SHOW RESULTS: Jim Baker judged the 35 Birds benched.   Champion Bird - John Hewitt,

Best Restricted - Rod Trueman.

April Table Show: John Carter will judge our Table Show, Blue Rung Birds only, Nest Feather and Adult Plumage.   Bring them along and let’s see what you have bred so far.

Feature:   “The April Moult”.   Panel Members, Jean Painter and Warren Wilson will discuss this time of the year and the preparation for the State Team Selection Show and the upcoming Breeding Season.

Entries for our Annual Show close on Thursday, 18th and then we are READY TO GO.
To run such a prestigious event we require your help.   If you have not already been given a small task, can you speak to Show Manager, Bob Pitt.  Preparation of the staging, stewarding, gophering, debenching, dismantling and the cleaning up of the YMCA Complex is required, with an early start at 6.30 am.

It would be appreciated if you could bring a plate of food to assist with our early morning tea.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS MADE A DONATION TOWARDS THIS SHOW.
THIS HAS ENABLED US TO HAVE AN EXCELLENT ‘SPECIALS’ LIST.

JANUARY MEETING

A large enthusiastic gathering of members and visitors were in attendance for our first meeting of 2010.
At the completion of General Business and the BSNSW Report, members enjoyed a presentation by John Hewitt on the topic of “My Breeding Season”.    John introduced his talk by explaining what he has achieved already, and what he is hoping to achieve in the next five years, with his current quality birds.

Selected pairs were on show for discussion.   A wire breeding cabinet and nest box inspired many questions on feeding, soft food, water additives and his general birdroom management, as well as “Show Preparation” and his answers made his talk all the more interesting.

  ILLAWARRA BRANCH’S 50TH ANNUAL SHOW

Congratulations to our members who won prizes and awards at the Show.    All goes well for our State Team Challenge Competition in preparing a competitive St. George team.     It is great to see so many of our members gaining Platinum Wing points in this prestigious competition.

2010 ANNUAL SHOW REPORT

The Bernie Mullane Sports Complex, Kellyville was a hive of activity from 7 a.m. on Sunday, 24th January, 2010 where the 56th BSNSW Annual Show was conducted, with 84 exhibitors benching 834 birds.    Judges were Reg Bohringer, Craig Buckingham, Matt Campbell, Peter Dodd, Gary Gazzard and Andrew Plunkett.

Dr Ronald Yardley (son of the late Harley Yardley) attended the afternoon and gave a short address on his late father, which was most informative.    Ronald stayed on to present all the awards to the winners of the 2009 Platinum Wing Competition and the Champion Exhibitor in Open, Intermediate and Novice.   Jean Gorman presented the Bob Gorman Award for the Maximum Specials, which was won by Cedric D’Costa.

Once again an excellent M.C. job was done by Don Burke from “Burke’s Backyard” fame, and Certificates of

Appreciation were awarded to Dr.Ron and Don on behalf of the Society for making themselves available for the   show.

Prior to the commencement of the show awards, three Life Membership Awards were bestowed on Kathy Manton, Ian Hanington and Ian Manton for services to the Society.   Congratulations to these three hard-working members who received a bar badge and a framed certificate to mark this special occasion.

Congratulations go to Grand Champion winner, Ian Hanington who benched a stylish Green Cinnamonwing Cock, which was his successful Logie winner from last year’s National in Tasmania.   Open young was the largest section with 258 birds.

Metal Poisoning in Birds

It is amazing how often common things occur!   I have seen a string of heavy metal poisonings lately.   Let’s discuss some of the ins and outs of metal poisoning in birds.  Part 3.

Prevention - can I do it?

Preventing your pet cockatoo from getting access to anything containing lead is difficult but not impossible. Probably restricting his/her movement to an area that you know has no lead in it is the best bet.   Keeping them out of garages and storage sheds is a must. Zinc poisoning is generally from aviary wire.   New wire is the worst but I have seen several cases where the wire was several years old.    Imported wire (Chinese) appears to be the most toxic.   Batches of wire can vary in their toxicity level so it is difficult to guess which wire is the safest.   Ageing the wire is recommended; leave the roll out in the weather for at least 12 months before using it.   Washing the wire in an acidic solution (10% vinegar solution) is also recommended but is not 100% effective.   Painting the wire with a plastic paint might work if the species is not a great chewier.     I have a couple of clients who have the antidote injection on hand; they inject any bird that looks suspicious. This is after they have scrubbed the wire several times without elimination of the problem

Metal Poisoning in Birds

It is amazing how often common things occur!   I have seen a string of heavy metal poisonings lately. Let’s discuss some of the ins and outs of metal poisoning in birds.  Part 2.

What symptoms?

The symptoms of heavy metal poisoning are grouped together so that we discuss metal poisoning as one entity. However my experience is that poisoning with lead is always more acute and more severe than zinc poisoning.  General signs such as lethargy, depression, weakness, anorexia, regurgitation and diarrhea can occur with both metals.  What you see is related to the amount taken, the size of the bird and how long it has been eating the metal.  In some cases of low-level intake you may see nothing spectacular, just birds that are a bit “off”.  With the swallowing of a lump of lead the bird will become critically ill.   They stop eating, their crops fail to empty, they get wobbly on their feet, they may have convulsions or they may just die without warning. Zinc poisonings tend to be subtler; the birds develop very slight nervous symptoms, become depressed and have difficulty flying. By the time you notice the bird is ill it is probably severely poisoned.  I also wonder what low-level poisonings do to fertility. If the bird is taking in small amounts of metal, not enough to make it sick, will this affect the fertility of the bird – my guess is yes!

JULY MEETING

It was most pleasing to see some new members join our Committee at this year’s AGM, where all positions were once again filled.   Our Vice Chairmen presented a record number of 19 medals to members for their participation in the selection of birds for the State Team Challenge Competition.   After a short supper break, Bruce Bradford presented a Power Point “feature” of Nola’s photos taken at the STCC  which shows the three birds selected for NSW in each variety, and what position they achieved in the National Show.   The second presentation was a full coverage of the Australian Championships in Burnie , Tasmania showing the winners from the last seven years, and the 2009 first three place getters in all the classes, together with Judges’ comments.   Other interesting highlights from the week’s activities were also featured.
